Does Watching TV and the Computer Hurt Your Eyes?

These days, binge watching isn’t just for fun … it’s a way of life. You get home excited to watch an episode of your favorite show and before you know it, you’ve fallen into a deep, dark rabbit hole about seven episodes past your bedtime. With all that time spent looking at screens, you may find yourself wondering, does watching TV and the computer hurt my eyes?It depends. Are you watching hours upon hours of reality TV? All that drama is bound to make you cry or in some severe cases, cause your eyes to roll so hard you get a glimpse of your brain. Just kidding! However, you could be putting yourself at risk of digital eye strain.

There’s blue light that comes from the screen, and it’s been linked to an increase in eye fatigue at the end of the day. Exposure to this high-energy light has been linked to digital eye strain in as little as two hours of exposure. Symptoms of digital eye strain include things like tired, dry, burning, or watery eyes. The problem with TV and computer use comes when you’re using either for long periods of time. According to recent surveys, most of us spend about nine hours a day on our digital devices.

There are certain lenses and lens coatings that can help alleviate some of that digital eye strain you might be experiencing. These specialty lenses and coatings help filter out different levels of blue light.

Another way to combat digital eye strain is to follow the 20/20/20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break, and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away. Twenty seconds is pretty brief, so you can probably work it into your schedule. If you can extend that time a little bit longer, all the better!
